Mourning Alice and Ellen Kessler: The twins died at the age of 89. A year and a half ago, they spoke openly about their heritage.

They are considered the “legs of the nation” and are Germany’s most famous twins. Alice and Ellen Kessler died on Monday at their home in Grünwald near Munich. This was first reported by the newspaper “Bild”. Police confirmed online in Munich about the police operation in Grünwald. An authority spokesman initially did not provide further details.

One thing is certain: two years before their deaths, the twins made one of their last big decisions. In the fall of 2023, Alice and Ellen Kessler thought about their estate and changed their will again.

“My sister and I discussed that not just one person should own something, but several people,” Ellen Kessler told “Bild” in the spring of 2024. The initial plan was to bequeath all the assets to the aid organization Doctors Without Borders.

But then the two sisters decided to name additional heirs in their wills. “We want to divide our inheritance more fairly, not throw it all into one pot.” CBM Blind Mission, children’s aid organization Unicef, Artist Paul Klinger’s Social Organization and the German Patient Protection Foundation should also receive some of their assets. Both Ellen and Alice Kessler remained childless throughout their lives.

Alice and Ellen Kessler began their careers in the 1950s. As teenagers, they danced at a revue theater in Düsseldorf, where the director of the famous Lido in Paris noticed them. His international breakthrough began with his involvement on the Champs-Élysées in 1955.

During their career, the Kessler twins have performed on stage with such greats as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Harry Belafonte and Sammy Davis. They manage their costs wisely. “We earned a very good living, never wasting our money and investing it well,” Ellen Kessler said at the time. “There’s still a little left in the tank.”

He also said: “We won’t live that long.” Just a year and a half later, Alice and Ellen Kessler died. Just months after their 89th birthday, the famous twins died together at their home in Grünwald.
