U2’s reunion was celebrated 32 years ago. This historic day attracted thousands of Berliners – and created an unusual picture.
The border between East and West Berlin was once separated by subway line 2. However, on November 13 1993, the route known to Berliners today was resumed. To commemorate the anniversary, Berlin’s public transport company has published archival images.
With the reopening of the Potsdamer Platz train station, relations between East and West were resumed. On that day, Berlin was “placed under a state of emergency,” according to the BVG. According to BVG, thousands of Berliners want to take part in the event.
In the context of this connection, reunification celebrations were held at various train stations. These include the subway stations Alexanderplatz, Stadtmitte, Wittenbergplatz and the Märkisches Museum.
At 13:03. the first subway train starts from the Vinetastraße terminal in Pankow and runs to Ruhleben. During the time Germany was divided, U2 operated from Pankow to Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße (later Thälmannplatz) until reunification.
Today the line connects many districts of East and West Berlin, including Pankow, Mitte, Schöneberg and directly to the Spandau gate. This line serves a total of 29 stations and covers a distance of approximately 20.7 kilometers. Only U5 has more stops.
According to BVG, a new series of trains have also been used on the line since this year. In addition, infrastructure, including at train stations, will be modernized. Construction work is currently underway on the line between Ruhleben and Theodor-Heuss-Platz until the end of November. Replacement traffic has been arranged.
