“UEFA accepts request”: FC Barcelona will be able to play again at Camp Nou in the Champions League

The famous music will return there. UEFA has given FC Barcelona the green light to once again play Champions League matches at its partially renovated Spotify Camp Nou stadium, the reigning Spanish champions announced on Wednesday.

“UEFA accepted the request, considering that all the necessary conditions have been met,” explained FC Barcelona in its press release. The announcement comes days after Barca announced their return to the championship on Saturday at their legendary stadium, which has undergone extensive renovations for two and a half years, the final of which has been postponed several times.

Therefore, Barca will welcome Eintracht Frankfurt in C1 at Camp Nou on December 9, a little over two weeks after returning to La Liga against Athletic Bilbao. However, if Barcelona returns to Camp Nou, the temporary capacity will be 45,401 spectators, which will increase to 105,000 once work on the upper stands is completed, making it the largest stadium in Europe.

1.5 billion euros spent

The return to Camp Nou ends a complicated saga for the club in which it had to repeatedly delay the stadium’s reopening, with construction delays and an inability to get the green light from the authorities derailing its plans.

Defending champion Spain, currently second in La Liga behind Real Madrid, has played its home games at the Montjuic Olympic stadium since the start of the 2023-24 season, and sometimes at the Johan Cruyff stadium, its training ground.

The postponement of this work is a huge loss for the Catalan giants who are experiencing financial difficulties and need the income generated from their stadium to regain stability. It is estimated that in the end Barcelona will spend 1.5 billion euros on the reconstruction of Camp Nou.
