The White House confirmed that President Trump is developing a plan to “end the war in Ukraine, for the good of both sides.” A plan with Moscow that the tycoon conveyed by Pentagon generals to Kiev. And Volodymyr Zelensky, while not disclosing the contents of the initiative that is likely to have a devastating impact on Ukraine, said he was ‘ready to collaborate’: ‘I will discuss it with Trump’, he said while several Ukrainian sources branded the plan as “absurd and unacceptable”. The frustration shared by Europe came to a halt, as Moscow announced that it had taken another important target for its advance: the city of Kupyansk.

Ukraine’s president pushed for “peace with dignity” after meeting with the top US official, Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll. Zelensky called for “peace with dignity” for his country tonight, following a meeting in Kiev with a senior US official who presented him with Washington’s plans to end the Russian invasion. “Ukraine needs peace. Peace with dignity, so that conditions respect our independence, our sovereignty and the dignity of the Ukrainian people,” Zelensky said on social media after the meeting with Driscoll.
“The United States and Ukraine will work together and in a constructive way,” the Ukrainian presidency said in an apparently conciliatory note. The mantra, even in Brussels, is just one: calm and lime. However, there are concerns regarding the agreement signed between the Tycoon and the Tsar without taking into account the interests of Europe and Ukraine. Not everyone in Kiev was brave (some senior officials called the plan “a provocation”). “There are no signs the Kremlin is ready for serious negotiations: Vladimir Putin wants to buy time to avoid US sanctions,” said Oleksandr Merezhko, chairman of parliament’s foreign policy committee. It appears that Army Minister Daniel Driscoll conveyed the plan to Zelensky, accompanied by a military delegation. Trump’s Middle East and Peace Envoy, Steve Witkoff, was supposed to meet Zelensky in Türkiye but the trip was canceled because, according to some rumors, the origins of this plan upset the Ukrainian president. In fact, Witkoff will negotiate it with his Russian counterpart, Kirill Dmitriev, who, like him, is not a diplomat and has no direct ties to any official structure (neither the Foreign Ministry nor the Kremlin). Legitimacy comes from the trustworthiness of the bosses: Dmitriev’s wife, for example, is a close friend of one of Putin’s daughters, while Witkoff is Trump’s business partner. But for Nbc News, besides the former owner of the building there are also Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
“The president is frustrated with Russia and Ukraine’s refusal to commit to a peace agreement and he and his team are developing a detailed and mutually acceptable plan,” a White House spokesman said. “We hope that the lines of dialogue will be truly open so that this tragedy can be brought to an end”, commented Vatican Foreign Minister Pietro Parolin, recalling the need for “compromises” in a journey that is still “uphill”, in which Europe “must participate and not lag behind”. Nonetheless, as far as we know, the Gaza-style 28-point plan includes clauses that are unacceptable to Kiev, such as halving the army and leaving the occupied territories. “Ending a complex and deadly war like the one in Ukraine requires a serious and realistic exchange of ideas,” Rubio wrote in X. “And achieving lasting peace will require both sides to accept difficult but necessary concessions.” Here, the word circled in red is ‘both’. For now there is no sign of anything from Russia, accused EU high representative Kaja Kallas, recalling the absence of a ceasefire and the continuous bombing of Ukraine, resulting in many civilian casualties. “We want a just and lasting peace but this does not mean giving up: Ukraine, which has fought heroically for three years, will reject it”, stressed French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot as he arrived at a regular meeting with his European Union counterparts.

The ministers – apart from Hungary – all reiterated that Europe and Ukraine must get involved because, otherwise, peace will not work. However, when faced with a take-it-or-leave-it decision from Washington, the statement becomes less clear. What makes us suspicious is the timing. Now that European countries are engaged in complex but increasingly unequal negotiations over the use of Russian assets to support Kiev and after America has imposed heavy sanctions (and other sanctions may be on the way), Moscow has fortuitously shown itself to be in dialogue. “He put on a good face because he was afraid of loans to Ukraine,” Kallas assured. “I think they’ve gotten to the point where they’re running out of money and they want to show the outside world that they’re super strong, but that’s not the case.” But Putin doesn’t seem intimidated at all. And he relaunched his offensive after the corruption scandal that hit Kiev: Ukraine’s leaders were “sitting on the golden toilet” and not thinking about the fate of their army, the Tsar said while visiting the military command on the front line, namely Kupyansk, where he went to collect his army’s new victories.
