Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Athens on Sunday, where he intended to conclude an agreement with Greece on gas supplies intended to meet his country’s winter needs. At Athens international airport, he was greeted by Deputy Prime Minister, Kostis Hadjidakis, according to images from Greek public television ERT, for this visit, his first since 2023, where he will meet specifically with Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“We have prepared an agreement with Greece regarding gas supplies to Ukraine”said the Ukrainian president, before his arrival in Greece, on social networks.

Volodymyr Zelensky clarified that Kyiv had also signed financial agreements to cover this “almost 2 billion euros” gas imports, intended to compensate for production losses resulting from the Russian attack. The amounts came from the Ukrainian government, European banks under guarantee of the European Commission, Ukrainian and Norwegian banks.

In October, Moscow launched its biggest bombing campaign against Ukrainian gas sites since the invasion began in 2022, disrupting 60% of production, the main source of fuel for heating.

The visit to Greece is Zelensky’s first visit to Europe, which will also include France on Monday and Spain on Tuesday.
