“Absolutely historic”: Trump enthusiastic about Gaza resolution
Nearly two months ago, US President Trump published his Gaza peace plan. Now the UN Security Council has passed an important resolution securing his plans.
US President Donald Trump views the adoption of a resolution to secure the Gaza Strip peace plan at the UN Security Council as historic progress. “This will be one of the largest endorsements in UN history, leading to further peace around the world and a truly historic moment!” the Republican wrote in his online mouthpiece, Truth Social. The vote would mean “recognition and approval by the PEACE COUNCIL that I chair,” he wrote.
Shortly before, the UN Security Council had adopted a resolution introduced by the US on Monday evening (local time). In New York, 13 Council member states voted in favor of the proposal, which among other things provides an international troop force to stabilize a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas. Russia and China abstained.
Trump thanked UN Security Council members who supported the plan. However, he did not discuss the Gaza Strip, Israel, Hamas or Palestine.
The 20-point plan calls for a “Peace Council.”
The formation of a Peace Council is one of the 20-point Gaza peace plan that Trump published at the end of September. This agreement also stipulates that the future Gaza Strip will be managed as a transitional government by a committee consisting of non-political experts.
The committee will consist of Palestinians and qualified international experts and will be overseen and monitored by a new international transitional body, the Peace Council, which Trump wants to lead. Additional members have not been announced. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was also reported to be there.
