America demands Germany take more responsibility in NATO. They even see the top position as possible.
The US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, wants Germany to take more responsibility in the defense alliance. According to media reports, he told a security conference in Berlin that he saw Germany in a position to take command of NATO forces in Europe.
“I look forward to the day when Germany approaches the US and says they are ready to take over the position of Supreme Allied Commander. I think we are still a long way from that, but I look forward to these discussions,” the British Independent quoted him as saying. According to the newspaper, German Lt. Gen. Wolfgang Wien, who represents Germany in NATO, said he “sees this a little differently.”
The American move is surprising because the role of commander, also known as sateur, has traditionally been in American hands. Wina also confirmed this, but admitted that she was ready to take on more responsibility.
Saceur is an abbreviation for “Supreme Allied Commander Europe” – the supreme commander of NATO forces in Europe. The position traditionally belongs to a high-ranking US general or admiral. Saceur leads Allied Command Operations (ACO) and is militarily responsible for planning and directing all NATO operations. The position is currently held by General Alexus G. Grynkewich.
Whitaker wrote in Platform He called this “investing in defence, encouraging industrial cooperation, building resilience, protecting cohesion – which is our greatest strategic advantage.”
At the start of the conference, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called on European allies to immediately expand defense readiness on the continent. He was referring to the growing threat from Russia. The SPD politician signed an agreement with his Swedish counterpart Pål Jonson to increase military cooperation with NATO countries.
“Moscow has launched a hybrid attack on all of us through cyberattacks, espionage, sabotage and disinformation,” Pistorius said. “The Baltic Sea, long seen as a bridge between European countries, is increasingly becoming an area of confrontation – in its own unique way. It is Putin’s testing ground for our ability to deter and respond.”
