The frustration after the setback in the title race is huge among VfL Wolfsburg footballers, but striker Alexandra Popp is looking forward to it.

Because just three days after the bitter 2:3 (1:2) majority against Eintracht Frankfurt, there will be a fierce duel with record winners Olympique Lyon in the Champions League on Tuesday evening (9 p.m.).

Reunion in Lyon with former Wolfsburg player Jule Brand

“We are not favourites,” said the striker, according to “Kicker”. However: “We can show that we are still here.” Wolfsburg know about the quality of their opponents, and VfL “felt them last season too,” Popp said.

In the 2024/25 season, VfL faced France in the group phase and left the field as losers after both meetings. Ahead of the new meeting, which also featured a reunion with former Wolfsburg player Jule Brand, Popp warned:

We have to jump into everything and try to take the fun out of the game and take a toll on ourselves. We’ll have to see if we succeed.

VfL and Lyon with perfect records

With two wins from two matches, Wolves, who are in third place in the premier class phase, have a perfect record so far, the same as Lyon. “We started well and now we want to carry this feeling and act boldly,” said coach Stephan Lerch. “We can play freely. We don’t feel much pressure now.”

Lena Oberdorf’s injury shocked her teammates. Football doesn’t seem to be able to control ligament problems among women.

However, just before the match, there was a setback for Popp and Co. against Frankfurt on Saturday. “It always feels like matches against Eintracht are wild, but we can’t lose this match,” stressed Popp. Because of the majority, “this defeat hurts even more.”

However, Popp does not want to exaggerate being six points behind leaders Bayern Munich. He didn’t want to talk about “early decisions”; the team wants to “stay at the top, that’s clear” despite everything. But before that, we have to survive in Lyon.
