Francis Kaufmann, accused of the double murder of his partner Anastasia Trofimova and her daughter Andromeda, found dead on June 7 in Villa Pamphili, attacked Correctional Police officers this afternoon in Rebibbia prison. At the end of the training hour, Osapp explained, “he suddenly became angry, refusing to return to his cell. Despite repeated requests from staff for calm, the man began shouting threatening phrases, attempted to initiate a physical confrontation and hit the intervening officers several times. It was only thanks to the timely and professional intervention of the Correctional Police, assisted by healthcare and supervision staff, that the situation was able to return to calm after moments of extreme tension. Several officers suffered bruises and wounds, with a prognosis of up to five days.”
“Today’s episode – said Osapp’s Secretary General, Leo Beneduci – is yet another demonstration of how in Italian prisons the safety of its staff is put at risk every day by subjects with serious behavioral disorders and by a penitentiary system that is now collapsing. It is unacceptable that women and men in the Penitentiary Police have to face, often alone and without adequate means, such dangerous situations. We ask for the immediate intervention of the Ministry of Justice and the Department of Penitentiary Administration to guarantee safe working conditions that respect the sacrifices of operators us.”
Osapp also underlined that, in the Rebibbia Nuovo Complesso prison in Rome, “compared to the regulatory capacity of 1,080 places, there are currently 1,630 prisoners, with overcrowding further deteriorating the safety and working conditions of the staff. The union therefore renews its call to end institutional indifference and launch a serious intervention plan aimed at visibly protecting the safety, health and dignity of penitentiary staff”.
