Urban guerrilla war scene today, Friday 21 November in Bologna. Rockets and smoke bombs were launched at a demonstration attended by around 5 thousand people organized by Potere al Popolo, on the occasion of the Virtus-Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball match, at the sports hall. They protested the choice to play the match with an Israeli team.
The procession stopped twice a few meters from the police line, located at the entrance to Via delle Lame, shouting ‘The Meloni government steps down!’, ‘If it doesn’t change, the intifada is here too’ and ‘Let’s block everything’.
The match at PalaDozza and its controversy
In fact, at 20.30, the Euroleague match between Virtus Bologna and Maccabi Tel Aviv is scheduled at PalaDozza, which will take place after the controversy of the last days, with the area around the armored building. Taking part in the demonstration included Power to the People, grassroots unions, Palestinian youth and the collective, relaunch ‘Show Israel the red card’ campaign. With them was also activist Patrick Zaki.
Criticism of the League
“It is madness to turn a sporting spectacle into a moment of conflict and violence: certain left-wing groups who fanned the flames of anger have proven irresponsible and unfit” the League’s note said. “Compassionate and total solidarity with the women and men of the police force.”
