Snow starts the week: In several regions of Germany snow fell on Monday and in the evening. “Besides that Alps “Snow fell mainly in the low mountains,” said meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD).
It was already winter by noon in Sauerland on Monday: with temperatures just below zero, the first spruce trees above 500 meters were covered in snow. At Kahler Asten and in the ski areas around Winterberg, low temperatures and fresh snow make it slippery.
This week also started with snow in Bavaria – not just in the Alps. Although there was already 20 centimeters of fresh snow in the high Alps on Monday, some rooftops in the Allgäu were also covered in snow throughout the day. According to DWD, five centimeters of new snow formed in the foothills of the Alps.
In the Erzgebirge, winter services are already being deployed in extremely cold temperatures. When temperatures drop below zero, snow shovels clear mud from roads above 600 meters. Slippery roads and sometimes heavy snow caused a bit of traffic congestion during Monday’s rush hour.
With temperatures around zero degrees overnight, DWD warned of slippery conditions caused by fresh snow, especially in low mountains to the south and east.
