Frankfurt predicted a dangerous and slippery night. What will happen in the next few hours – and who needs to be especially careful.
The German Weather Service (DWD) warned on Sunday evening about the weather situation in the Frankfurt city area: Drivers and pedestrians should prepare for winter road conditions. The situation was critical until 11 p.m. Until then, there is an increased risk of black ice from freezing rain.
Authorities advise avoiding unnecessary travel and extreme caution when making unavoidable trips in traffic jams. It said traffic delays and disruption should be expected.
In the afternoon there was light snowfall in Frankfurt, which DWD said was expected to last until Monday morning at 3am. The amount of fresh snow is expected to be between one and five centimeters. It spreads smoothly.
Road users should adapt their driving behavior to winter conditions and possible visibility restrictions. There is also a frost warning in the metropolitan city of Hesse: temperatures are expected to be between 0 and minus 5 degrees Celsius from Sunday afternoon until 7am on Monday morning.
At the beginning of the week, the thermometer still showed a maximum temperature of 5 to 6 degrees. Nighttime temperatures hover around freezing, sometimes a little below. Temperatures are expected to be slightly below zero, especially on Wednesday evening.
Towards the middle of the week, daily highs temporarily drop to 3 to 4 degrees before becoming slightly cooler again starting Thursday. The first weekend in December saw a slight warming up with highs around 8 degrees, but at night temperatures remained cool around 5 degrees.
