What do we know about the explosion in downtown New Delhi

On Monday evening in the capital of India, New Delhi (afternoon in Italy), a car exploded on the road near the Red Fort, in the city center: 8 people died and more than 20 were injured. The nature of the incident was unclear, but police said they were investigating whether it was a terrorist attack. However, in the following hours, no claims of responsibility for the attack were made public.

The exploded car drove slowly through traffic just before a red light. The explosion damaged several other vehicles in the vicinity. It is not known who was on board the plane, and police are trying to trace its owner. Investigators are looking for evidence in the area around the blast, which occurred near a market area that is also popular with tourists.

Terrorist attacks are rare in New Delhi because there is always a large police presence. The Red Fort (called Lal Qila in Hindi) is a vast complex of seventeenth-century buildings and is considered one of the major historical landmarks of the city, which is huge and has an estimated population of around 30 million.
