This white march took place the day after the young man’s funeral, in Arques (Pas-de-Calais). The participants started in the public park of Saint-Omer, the town where Mathis grew up and where his parents lived. The procession then headed to the city hall.
An investigation was opened following the death of the 19-year-old on Saturday, November 1. Mathis was hit at 4:48 a.m. on Boulevard de la Liberté by a motorist driving at high speed. The 31-year-old driver allegedly got behind the wheel after consuming nitrous oxide. He was charged with roadkill under three aggravating circumstances: clearly deliberate violation of safety and caution, hit-and-run and refusal to comply, recalled ICI Nord. The driver, who was found to have committed a traffic violation, was placed in pre-trial detention.
