Ultra-processed foods now represent an average of 31% of the diet of French adults according to a study published in the journal. British Medical Journal. The portion has continued to increase since the rise of the agri-food industry in the 1970s.

In 2009, a team of Brazilian researchers Carlos A. Monteiro, professor of nutrition at the University of Sao Paulo, proposed a classification of foods based on their degree of processing. Ultraprocessed foods are defined as foods that have undergone significant processing and/or contain industrial additives and additives.

A number of studies have proven a link between consumption of this product and the risk of developing certain diseases. Among the most obvious links are the risk of overweight and obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, or depressive symptoms.
