It is still unclear whether Manuel Neuer will be in goal for FC Bayern after this season. Now reports from Italy are causing a stir – because a big name has been brought in as his successor.
Even at the age of 39, Manuel Neuer continues to put in strong performances for FC Bayern and remains as safe as ever. Not surprisingly, speculation arose about the goalkeeper’s return to the German national team, to the point that Neuer himself ruled out a DFB comeback. But his future in Munich remains unclear; His contract expires next summer.
Neuer himself recently viewed the situation calmly. “I’m completely relaxed,” he said on the sidelines of Bayern’s Champions League game at Paris Saint-Germain in early November. “I’ll take my time over the winter. And then you can always talk.” First, he wanted to wait and see how his body reacted in the coming weeks – with the tight schedule and lower temperatures.
On the other hand, Bayern officials are reportedly working on the goalkeeper position in the team intensively.
According to Italy’s “Gazzetta dello Sport”, the German record champion is said to have chosen his potential successor: AC Milan’s Mike Maignan. The French goalkeeper, who moved from Lille to the Rossoneri in Italy in 2021, is only under contract at Milan until the end of the season. Apart from FC Bayern, Juventus Turin and Chelsea FC are also said to be interested. According to the report, Maignan himself would prefer a move to the Premier League – specifically to the “Blues”.
The 30-year-old moved to AC Milan in 2021 and was voted goalkeeper of the season in his first season in Italy. Maignan also regularly puts in strong performances for the French national team; he was simply selected to the best team of the tournament at the 2024 European Championship.
“Sport Bild” reported on Sunday that Maignan is not a problem for Bayern. Instead, they hope Neuer will extend his contract. The club management did not want to give him any instructions. Meanwhile, 22-year-old Jonas Urbig must continue to build to become number one in the future.
