Another dark day for workplace accidents, with four victims: two in Pallagorio, in the province of Crotone; the others in Ceccano (Frosinone) and Pozzallo (Ragusa).
The two people who died in the Crotone area were a 78-year-old man, Francesco Lamazza, and a Pakistani worker whose identity and age are unknown at this time. Lamazza was driving a tractor and traveling along an interior road to reach his land to work on the olive harvest. The deceased Pakistani man and another worker of the same nationality who was seriously injured and taken by air ambulance to Catanzaro hospital, where he was treated with a special prognosis, were traveling in the same vehicle. The tractor, in a rural area between Pallagorio and Casabona, ended up, for reasons still unknown, in a ravine, falling more than a hundred meters. Lamazza died instantly, while one of the two Pakistanis with him was crushed by a tractor, and died shortly afterwards. Carabinieri from the Cirò Marina Company went to the scene, along with firefighters and 118 personnel. The rescue operation proved complicated due to the difficulty of reaching the crash site. When rescue teams reached the vehicle, they confirmed Lamazza’s death, while both workers appeared to be in serious condition. One of the two died moments later, while the other, who was hit by the tractor, suffered very serious injuries. Based on the Carabinieri’s findings, the tractor is thought to have fallen into a ravine due to a collapse that occurred along the rural road the three were traveling on. However, the military investigation continues, under the direction of the Crotone Prosecutor’s Office, to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident in detail.
One person killed in Ceccano was a 66-year-old construction worker who fell from scaffolding being installed for the renovation of the facade of a building in the city’s historic center. Carabinieri, local police and 118 personnel intervened on the spot and tried in vain to resuscitate the worker, also alerting an air ambulance. Staff of the Workplace Prevention and Safety Service of the Frosinone Local Health Authority carried out an inspection to verify compliance with accident prevention regulations and whether the worker died as a result of the impact or whether he felt sick and fell.
The fourth victim in this series of dramatic work accidents was a 36-year-old Albanian worker at a construction site in Pozzallo, in the Ragusa area, while the other person did not suffer serious injuries. Based on initial reconstruction, the two workers who were working on floor construction in a building under construction were hit by the arm of a cement mixer used for pouring concrete which suddenly collapsed, directly hitting the victim and grazing the injured person.
Another serious accident occurred in Civitella del Tronto, in Teramo province, where two workers were injured in an industrial accident that occurred inside a PET container production company. The two, according to initial reconstructions, were carrying out maintenance work on the machine when they were hit by a jet of molten plastic at extremely high temperatures. A 59-year-old worker was injured in one of his fingers, while another worker, aged 22, was injured in the face and in particular one of his eyes, suffering very serious burns.
