Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday that he was starting an “overhaul” of public companies in Ukraine’s energy sector, including nuclear operator Energoatom, which has been at the center of a massive corruption scandal for several days.
On Monday, the Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) announced that it had discovered a “criminal system” was at the origin of the embezzlement of 100 million dollars (around 86 million euros) in this sector, which led to the dismissal of the ministers of Justice and Energy. “We are starting the overhaul of a major public company in the energy sector”announced the Ukrainian leader in a press release shared on social networks.
Massive house cleaning at the energy company
According to the press release, a new supervisory board must be formed “within one week”, at Energoatom, the public nuclear operator at the center of the scandal. Apart from Energoatom, other public energy companies were also affected, such as hydroelectric power plant operators or national gas extraction and transportation operators.
